CARD DUEL
A mysterious Duelist has arrived at the Prontera square and challenges anyone passing by to a card duel. You build your hand, summon monsters from Rune-Midgard, and cast spells and traps to bring his life to zero, and you walk away with Confidential Floppy DiskConfidential Floppy Disk and Top Secret Floppy DiskTop Secret Floppy Disk to trade for equipment and consumables with the Duel Archivist.

When and where it happens

The Duelist appears at the Prontera square every 3 hours (12 AM, 3 AM, 6 AM, 9 AM, 12 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM and 9 PM), and each window lasts 30 minutes. The server announces by broadcast 10 minutes before each window opens.

While the window is open, just talk to the Duelist in Prontera (76, 63) to join. You do not need to bring anything: he hands you the Duel DiscDuel Disc and the cards on the spot, and entry is free.

The first duel takes place in the square's arena, open for anyone to watch. If it is occupied, your duel opens in a private arena; and if they all fill up, you join a queue and are called as soon as one frees up.

You play against the Duelist, not against other players. Each side starts with 4000 life points (LP) and a hand of 5 cards, and turns alternate until someone brings the other's LP to zero.

Keep the Duel DiscDuel Disc. It stays with you during the duel: use the item to reopen the menu whenever you need it.

How a duel works

A turn has five phases, always in the same order:

Phase What you do
Start of turn Draw 1 card. On the first turn of whoever goes first there is no draw and no attack.
Main Phase Summon 1 monster and use spells/traps.
Battle Phase Attack with your monsters.
Main Phase 2 Use more cards after attacking.
End of turn Pass the turn.

Summoning monsters and tribute

You summon 1 monster per turn, in one of the 3 zones on your side of the field. The stronger monsters demand a tribute: sacrificing your own monsters that are already on the field.

Monster level Tribute required
Level 1 to 4Summon directly, no tribute
Level 5 to 61 tribute
Level 7 or more2 tributes

Pay attention: some monsters have an effect when summoned or destroyed, and the effect triggers even when they are used as tribute.

Positions: Attack and Defense

Every monster enters the field in a position, and it changes what it does:

Position How it behaves
Attack Stays visible (shows the ATK) and can attack.
Face-down Defense Enters as a shadow ("Unknown Monster") and only you know which card it is. It does not attack, and the opponent only finds out what it is by attacking it.
Revealed Defense Shows the DEF and serves as a wall. It does not attack.

You can change a monster's position once per turn, except on the turn it was summoned. Flipping a Defense card to Attack reveals the monster.

Combat

Damage compares the values on the cards, with no rolls and no luck:

Situation Result
Direct attack (opponent has no monsters) The full ATK becomes damage to the opponent's LP.
Against a monster in Attack The one with the higher ATK destroys the other, and the ATK difference becomes damage to the LP of whoever lost the monster. With equal ATK, both destroy each other and nobody takes damage.
Against a monster in Defense If the ATK is higher than the DEF, the defender is destroyed with no damage to LP. If it is lower, the attacker takes the difference (DEF minus ATK) to their own LP. If they are equal, nobody is destroyed.

Destroyed monsters go to their owner's graveyard, and the Resurrection spell, from the Priest deck, brings one of them back.

The three decks

When you join, you choose a duelist class. The deck is always the same monsters (common to everyone) plus the Spells and Traps of your class.

Deck Style
Knight Protection and counterattack: boosts ATK and DEF, blocks and reflects attacks. Holy Cross, Defending Aura, Thorn Armor, Holy Cylinder.
Wizard Offensive magic power: area damage, LP burn and mass destruction. Storm Gust, Meteor Storm, Jupitel Thunder. This is the deck the Duelist himself uses.
Priest Healing and support: recovers LP, resurrects monsters and raises holy barriers. Heal, Magnificat, Magnus Exorcismus, Kyrie Eleison.

The complete list of cards, the 27 monsters with ATK, DEF, level and effect, and all the spells and traps of each class, is on the wiki, at the link at the end of the page.

Difficulties

You choose the difficulty of the duel. The harder it is, the better the Duelist plays, and the bigger the reward.

Difficulty How the Duelist plays
Easy Only summons weak monsters, with no tribute. Does not use spells or traps.
Medium Stronger monsters (up to 1 tribute) and starts using spells, either to destroy your strongest monster or to burn your LP.
Hard The most powerful monsters, including Lord of the Dead and Ifrit, which only appear here, spells often and traps set.

The event currencies

The diskettes are not the final prize: they are the currency you earn by beating the Duelist and spend at the Archivist's shop.

You can duel as many times as you want during the window, but the reward only counts for the first 3 victories of each window (regardless of difficulty). From the 4th on, the prize only returns at the next time slot. A defeat, a forfeit or running out of time gives nothing.

The diskettes stay with you between windows, so you can gather them little by little toward the Winged Hat.

The Duel Archivist's shop

The Duel Archivist is in Prontera (48, 96) and trades your diskettes for the event items.

Quick questions

Do I need any item or level to play?
No. Entry is open and free. The Duelist hands you the Duel DiscDuel Disc and the cards on the spot.

Can I duel another player?
No. The challenge is always against the Duelist. Other players can watch the duel in the square's arena.

I lost the duel. Do I lose anything?
Nothing but time. A defeat, a forfeit and running out of time simply give no prize, and a defeat does not count toward the window's limit of 3 victories.

Is it worth playing on Easy?
It is good for learning the rules, but since the limit is 3 victories per window, each victory on Hard yields more than double that of Easy. Once you get the hang of it, raise the difficulty.

Do the diskettes expire?
No. They accumulate between windows, so you can gather them at your own pace toward the Duelist's Winged HatDuelist's Winged Hat.

Good luck at the tables, and may your cards come in the right order.
